ORC Week One & Two
Hi Friends! It’s time for the Fall One Room Challenge. I’m tackling my Guest Bedroom as a guest participant! If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge, it is an 8 week challenge to get one room in your house fully finished! Learn more about the ORC here.
My guest room has been a very slow work in progress. We’ve been in our house for five years now and it’s the space where I’ve done the least. We put up new blinds and hung curtains when we first moved in and that was it! It became the catch all room with leftover furniture pieces that didn’t feel cohesive. So it’s time for some updates!!
Over time I started to figure out the design of the room. I was inspired by the floral bedding in the photo below. Both of the rooms in the below photos, use bold bright colors, and I knew that was something I wanted to do in this space.

(Yes, I still clip images from magazines. lol )
I looked for quite a while before I found this Bari J Bedding. I purchased it back in 2019, and it’s still available in a Full/Queen size.
If you’re not familiar with Bari J., check her out! She’s a painter & designer whose art is centered around florals and bold colors. Learn more about her on her website & instagram
And feel free to check out my Pinterest board to see other images that have inspired me!

The first big project is to remove the popcorn ceiling. I had it tested for asbestos a few months back with a test kit I ordered from Amazon. Our home was built in 1972, so I wanted to be sure I was safe to tackle this project on my own. Once the popcorn comes down, I’ll have to get the drywall back smooth and ready for paint. I do have some drywall work to do around the door frame as well, this was damage done before we purchased the house.
Once the dry wall work is handled, it’ll be time for painting the room. I’ve selected Luau Green from Sherwin Williams. I did test swatch a couple other colors but the Luau Green has been my fave, it isn’t too bright and has a vintage feel.
Swatches
Left, Darker Green: Relentless Olive
Right, Lighter Green: Fernwood Hgsw1233
Bottom: Luau Green SW6712
The Relentless Olive may show up in some of the furniture projects I have for the space, we’ll see. The wicker pieces all need a fresh coat of paint. The trunk was from my childhood bedroom & the desk was a recent Facebook marketplace find. The wood chest of drawers is a piece my husband has had for a while, it’s got a lot of veneer loss on the drawer fronts. My plan is to remove all the veneer and paint them, I may also strip the rest of the piece to re-stain.
There’s a few other smaller projects I plan to DIY. I have a thrifted mirror to go over the wood chest that needs a makeover. I also want to create a semi flush light fixture out of a basket to replace the current one.
There are a few more things I need to source for the space, lamps and the floral art for the gallery wall. I still have a few elements I need to decide on, like what I’m doing in the corner opposite the bed and what I’ll be hanging over the bed & over the wicker trunk.
Check back in next week to see how much progress I’ve made!
